Serena Williams will be playing for her country US in Fed Cup 2012. She has already committed to take part in the tie against Belarus on February 4th – 5th. The news has been confirmed by US Tennis Association. The winner of this tie will move forward to world group play-offs and will have a chance to contest for the trophy in 2013.

Willams, a 13-time Grand Slam champion and runner up at US Open 2011, may face Victoria Azarenka, the world no 4 in the Fed Cup tie. Incidentally, neither Serena nor her elder sister Venus has been a part of the US Fed Cup team since 2007. In 2010’s Fed Cup final, US lost to Italy, when both the Williams sisters were out due to injuries.

US have a record of winnin 17 Fed Cup titles overall and have an amazing statistics of 35-4 in home soil. However, they have not been able to lift the trophy since 2000. Last April, US were relegated to the 2nd tier of the tournament as they suffered a 5-0 whitewash against Germany.
